COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Students in Studies Abroad in Spain must enroll in both courses for a total of 6 credit hours.
Undergraduate, undergraduate honors, and graduate credit available.

Anthropology of Religion (ANTH/RELI 4640/6640)

Professor Jace Weaver, University of Georgia, Department of Religion
Laura Adams Weaver, University of Georgia, Department of English

An introduction to origins and evolution of religion as witnessed by Pre-Roman, Roman, and Christian Era Europe to the present day. Students will visit tombs, early religious centers, and sites associated with the rise of the modern nation-state and its relationship to religion. Walk the same paths and roads that strolled by Roman emperors, explorers, priests, and caliphs. Why just read about history and religion when you can walk in the very footsteps of those who made them?

Religious Heritage of the West (RELI 4900/8700)

Professor Jace Weaver, University of Georgia, Department of Religion
Laura Adams Weaver, University of Georgia, Department of English

In collaboration with Spanish faculty, experience the various strands of Western European religion through the lens of Spain. Study prehistoric traditions, the multiplicity of Roman religions, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. See ruins of Roman conquest. Tour key sites central to Islamic Spain and associated with the Spanish "discovery" of the Americas--two of which are listed in 1000 Places To See Before You Die. Walk the battlefields of the Spanish Civil War, one of Europe's last religious wars.
Spain has it all!

Guest Lecturer: José Javier León, Granada
